Water Testing for Industry: IS 10500, IS 456 & Effluent

We test water for factories, construction sites and facility managers: drinking water to IS 10500, water for concrete to IS 456, and process water and effluent for BOD, COD, solids, oil and grease, and heavy metals.

Standards

Standards used for the Water Test (Industrial & IS 10500)
Standard Scope
IS 10500 Drinking water — specification
IS 456 Plain and reinforced concrete — requirements for mixing and curing water
IS 3025 Methods of sampling and test (physical and chemical) for water and wastewater
CPCB norms Discharge limits for sewage and industrial effluent

Your report includes

  • Physical and chemical parameters: pH, TDS, conductivity, hardness, chlorides and more
  • Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and arsenic, by ICP
  • Bacteriological results: total coliforms and E. coli
  • Effluent parameters: BOD, COD, suspended solids, oil and grease
  • Comparison with the limits of IS 10500, IS 456 or the discharge norm you specify

Water testing for industrial users

Most water labs serve households. We focus on industrial and construction users, who need a report that stands up to an auditor, a client’s QA team or a pollution control board inspection.

Drinking water for staff (IS 10500). Factories and offices are expected to provide safe drinking water. IS 10500 sets acceptable and permissible limits for physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters.

Construction water (IS 456). Water used to mix and cure concrete must be free of harmful levels of acids, alkalis, organic matter, chlorides and sulphates. Unsuitable water can reduce strength and corrode reinforcement. Test the source before the project starts and whenever it changes.

Process water and effluent. For effluent and sewage treatment plants we test BOD, COD, total suspended solids, oil and grease, pH and heavy metals to check performance against your discharge limits.

Sampling makes or breaks the result

  • Use the right bottle: clean for chemistry, sterile for bacteriology.
  • Fill completely and cap tightly, unless we tell you otherwise.
  • Deliver quickly. Bacteriological results become unreliable when samples wait too long or get warm.
  • Record where and when you took the sample.

Water is often tested alongside cement and concrete on construction projects. Metals in water are measured by ICP in our chemical testing lab.

What to send

Sample requirements for the Water Test (Industrial & IS 10500)
Item Requirement
Chemical tests A clean, unused plastic bottle (1–2 litres), rinsed with the water being sampled, filled to the top and capped.
Bacteriological tests A sterile bottle, kept cool and delivered to the lab as soon as possible, ideally the same day. Ask us before sampling.
Label Source (borewell, tank, ETP outlet …), date and time of sampling, and the purpose of the test.

FAQ

Water Test (Industrial & IS 10500): FAQ

Still have questions? Talk to our technical team directly.

+91-9560999151

Which water test do I need for my factory?

For drinking water supplied to staff: IS 10500. For water used to mix or cure concrete: IS 456. For treated effluent or sewage: the discharge norms set by your consent to operate. Tell us the purpose and we'll quote the right parameter list.

Do you test water for construction?

Yes. Water for mixing and curing concrete must meet the IS 456 limits on pH, solids, chlorides and sulphates. Many projects test the site water source before work starts.

Do you do medical or pathology tests?

No. Shivam Test House is an industrial and materials testing laboratory. We test water, metals and construction materials, not human samples.

How long does a water test take?

Most chemical parameters are reported within 2–5 working days. BOD takes longer because the test itself runs over several days.
